Yard Sign Designs

Last week, we talked about all the fun things you can do with yard signs. Don't believe me? Take a look. Anyway, this week I want to talk to you about the actual design for your yard sign.

Yard signs are generally placed on street cor
ners and at traffic lights. Because of this, yard signs need to achieve the maximum impact very quickly. This means that somebody driving by can get the information they need without slowing down or endangering anybody.

This is achieved by keeping the information minimal on the design and using colors that have a high contrast. Above are some yard signs we found while out driving around. There is a good design, an okay design and a not so good design.

Lets start with the bad.

The sign that is attached to the post has light green text on a white background. It does not stand out nearly as well as the other two and is difficult to read from a distance. It is only really visible to people that are turning right and because motorists can turn right on red at this intersection, they may not stop l
ong enough to read the sign.

Next is the okay design.

The sign on the left is a better design but it still has it's issues. It has a darker orange graphic with white text. This sign has more contrast then the first one and it stands out better. The problem with this sign is the text. There is a lot of text for the area that is offered and it is small. The good thing about this design is
that the web site is larger then the rest of the text so people wanting to learn more can visit the team's web site for more information.

And now for the good design.

The design on the right is the the best design out of the three. It has dark red graphics on a white background. This produces high contrast and can be seen from a good distance away. Even with the low quality image you're looking at you can clearly see the company name and the phone number. It keeps the information minimal on the sign and the phone number stands out even more because it is the reverse of the rest of the design.

All three of those designs use only one color on a white background. Because of the way some yard signs a
re created, many sign shops will charge by the color and designs are limited by that. Over at Esigns.com all of the signs we print are in full color so your design is not limited. Here is a design that makes use of multiple colors in the design. Again this design is very good because it has a high contrast and the text is large and legible from a distance.

When designing your sign, put a little extra thought into the colors you want to use. Do the colors provide enough contrast to be seen from 10 feet? 20 feet? Evaluate the information you have on the sign. Is it necessary information or does it just add clutter?

With yard signs, you onl
y have a few moments to make an impression, make it a good one.

Until next time.
